The Apple Watch Ultra 4 costs around $980, and Apple doesn’t offer a display-only repair. So a case for $12 to $24 is an easy argument. The only question is which one. I tested three very different ones: a thick rubber case from Spigen, one made entirely of metal, and the best-selling case on Amazon with a built-in screen protector.

I checked each against the same points: price, what’s in the box, weight, whether sensors get covered, whether only the frame or the display too is protected, whether a screen protector fits underneath, how band changes go, whether all buttons work, and whether you can still dive with it.

About $16 | 6 grams | protects the frame only

The Spigen is a thick rubber case, and there’s nothing else in the box. At 6 grams you barely notice it on your wrist. Protection is solid, and it isn’t thin, so you can knock it against something without worrying.

What I like most are the buttons. The crown stays easy to reach, the side button has a clear, audible click, and the Action button feels clean too. Of the three, this is the nicest to use. The sensors stay clear, and the band change works without any contortions.

The catch: it only protects the frame, leaving the display exposed. And if you already have a large edge-to-edge screen protector on, the case won’t work. It lifted the glass right off as I fitted it. So you’ll need a smaller protector that stays inside the frame. Which ones are worth it is in my screen protector test for the Watch Ultra 4.

About $24 | 16 grams | protects the frame only

The metal case feels the most premium. You can’t squeeze it, the rim is real metal, and only the buttons and part of the bottom are plastic. If you like metal, this gives you exactly that.

Then there’s the weight: 16 grams. The watch itself weighs 62 grams, so you’re adding a quarter of its weight on top. You feel that.

Installation comes in two parts, and there are no instructions in the box. For several attempts the watch simply wouldn’t seat properly, sitting visibly lower on one side than the other. Only after flipping it around and starting over did everything click into place. At this price I don’t expect that.

The crown and side button work, though the click is quieter than on the Spigen. The Action button takes more force and is hard to find by feel, because there’s no raised marker.

My biggest objection: inside there are metal pins covered by nothing but a thin film, and that film presses in easily. To me it’s a matter of time before the frame underneath picks up scratches. With a proper inner lining this concept would be excellent.

About $12 for 2 pieces | 4 grams | protects frame and display

This is the cheapest case in the test, and you get two of them. The material is a matte plastic that feels better than the price suggests. At 4 grams it’s the lightest of the lot.

The key difference: the screen protector is already built in. So you get frame and display protection in one part and don’t need a separate glass. The touchscreen works unchanged, and I typed messages on the watch normally. The sensors stay clear, band changes are no problem, and it clips on in seconds.

Two catches: there’s a plastic rim around the crown that your finger catches on while turning. That gets annoying over time. And when diving, water gets under the built-in protector, after which the touchscreen stops responding reliably. If you actually dive with your watch, stay away from this one.

Verdict: Which Should You Get?

✓ Spigen Rugged Armor if operation matters to you and you’d rather run a separate, smaller screen protector anyway.
✓ The best-selling case if you want frame and display covered by one part and you don’t dive. At about $12 for two, that’s hard to beat.
✗ The metal case only if the look matters more to you than weight and installation, for climbing or long trips for example. For everyday use it’s too heavy for me, and too risky on the inside.

And if you know a good metal case with a proper inner lining, tell me under the video. I like the concept, just not this execution.
