Does the Apple Watch Ultra 4 need a screen protector? Most people’s first reaction is: nonsense, the display is sapphire. And that’s true. Sapphire sits at hardness 9 on the Mohs scale, and the scale ends at 10, which is diamond. I checked it myself and dragged a freshly broken porcelain tile, hardness 8, across the display. Afterwards there wasn’t a single scratch.

Even so, there’s a clear case for a screen protector here, for a completely different reason.

Why a Protector Makes Sense on a Sapphire Watch

Sapphire is hard, but hard doesn’t mean shatterproof. Hardness does nothing against an impact. If you slip while hiking and catch the watch on a rock, the glass is gone. And that’s exactly when it gets expensive.

With an iPhone you walk into an Apple Store and have the display replaced. For the Apple Watch that route doesn’t exist. Apple doesn’t offer a display-only repair. The case falls under „other damage“, and that costs about $740. For that money you’re essentially getting a replacement unit.

So a protector at roughly $8 to $11 isn’t scratch insurance, it’s a sacrificial layer. It breaks so the sapphire underneath doesn’t.

How I Tested

Every protector went through the same six criteria: what’s in the box, price per protector, installation, fit, touch sensitivity and brightness. Then came the hardness test, first with a fresh box cutter, then with the tile.

For context: ordinary tempered glass sits around 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale. The tile is an 8. So the fact that it attacks every one of these was expected. What matters is how badly, and whether the glass cracks.

The box includes an alignment tray, a squeegee, a tool for lifting the protector off and a full cleaning kit. The tray makes installation easy, and getting it crooked is practically impossible. Mine came out perfectly centered with not a single bubble.

The catch is the look. The Spigen doesn’t reach the titanium rim, it leaves a margin. That gives you three visible edges stacked up. Touch and brightness are flawless, and you won’t notice a difference. In the scratch test the tile leaves marks, but the glass stays in one piece.

The included removal tool is genuinely useful. It gets the protector off cleanly. Every brand should include one.

This one is built differently, with a raised rim that wraps over the entire display right up to the titanium case. Visually it’s the nicest solution here, and you practically can’t tell there’s a protector on at all.

Installation brought a fat bubble in the middle that came back after every attempt to push it out. It eventually settled and the result was flawless, but it took patience. There’s no alignment tray, though the shape leaves only one possible position.

Then came the surprise in the scratch test: on the very first pass with the tile the glass cracked. Not scratched, cracked. The display underneath stayed intact, which is exactly what the layer is there for. So as a sacrificial layer it works. Personally, though, I’d prefer one that doesn’t give up on first contact.

It looks identical to the cheap ESR, including the wrap-around rim and the edge-to-edge look. During installation I had to press small air pockets out along the rim with a fingernail, after which it sat perfectly. Touch and brightness again with nothing to report.

The difference shows up in the scratch test, and you can feel it. With the cheap ESR it felt like the tile cut straight in. Here it skids far more stubbornly. Scratches remain, but shallower, and the glass doesn’t crack. So in this case the „3x stronger“ on the box isn’t just a slogan.

What „Military Grade“ Actually Means

Both ESR boxes say „Military Grade Protection“ with a standard number. Behind it is a US military standard with 29 test criteria that manufacturers can pick and choose from, things like extreme cold or heat. The Apple Watch itself carries that kind of certification, but on a stick-on screen protector the label says very little. It’s mostly marketing.

Verdict

✓ ESR 3x stronger is my pick: edge-to-edge design, clearly tougher in the scratch test, and it doesn’t crack.
✓ Spigen is the one to get if you also want to run a case. Wrap-around protectors can clash with cases. A separate case test is coming.
✗ ESR standard looks great and costs the least, but it’s too fragile for me.

One question stays open, and here I need you: wrap-around protectors end right at the case. I couldn’t test whether water gets underneath while diving. If you have experience with that, leave it under the video.
