iPhone Duo Cases Tested: 9 Models, and Only 3 Work With a Screen Protector

The iPhone Duo costs $1,999, and replacing the inner display at Apple runs to $999. A case here isn’t a matter of taste. I bought nine of them and put every single one through the same checks: fit, build quality, weight, protection for the back, the hinge, the camera and both displays, button access, wireless charging, and MagSafe holding force measured with a pull gauge.

And then there’s the question almost all of them failed: does the case work together with a screen protector? The short answer is usually no. As soon as a case has a separate front frame that lies on top, that frame rests on the glass. Only three of the nine get along with a screen protector.

A note for readers in the US: three of the nine cases I tested — the Spigen Tough Armor, the ROXX Clear Case and the ROXX Silicone Case — aren’t sold for the Duo in the United States. They’re covered further down for completeness, but there’s nothing to link.

The category winners

There’s no single overall winner here, and claiming one would be dishonest. These cases solve different problems, and not one of them solves all of them.

Best protection: Torras — $69.99

The only case in this test that actually protects the whole iPhone Duo: back, hinge, camera and the front display. It comes with a 360-degree kickstand that rotates and holds in any position, a screen protector in the box, and spare adhesive strips. At 50 grams it isn’t light, and the front bar covers a visible strip of the display. If maximum protection is what you’re after, there’s no way around it.

Best value: JETech — $34.99

The cheapest case in this test and one of the smartest. 30 grams, a back shell only with no front frame and no adhesive strips at all, so you can take it off whenever you like. The hinge is protected at the side, the shell folds back against the device by itself — something several far more expensive cases failed to do. MagSafe holds at a strong 1.84 kilograms, and because nothing sits on the front, a screen protector works without any trouble.

Lightest: Pitaka — $59.99

17 grams. That’s less than half the average in this test, and you genuinely stop noticing there’s anything on the device. Aramid fibre, pleasantly textured, camera protected, and it sits perfectly even without the adhesive strips it ships with. The catch is that it protects almost nothing else, and the MagSafe holding force of 1.09 kilograms is the weakest among the magnetic cases. A case for the carbon look, not for a drop.

Best with a screen protector: Torro — $44.99

The only case that works without complaint even with large screen protectors. Real leather, clean stitching, an interior lining, a stand function, and nothing needs gluing — the device clicks in and holds firmly. The corners are hard, so a drop on the edge is covered.
The catch is substantial: no MagSafe at all. Not weak, simply absent. Wireless charging works only poorly and unreliably. And at 79 grams it’s the heaviest case here.

Best looks, and the one I’m keeping: Apple Folio — $129.99

The most expensive case in this test, and objectively not good protection: the frame is fully exposed, and the MagSafe holding force of 0.88 kilograms is the weakest of the entire test. It stays on my device anyway. It’s lined throughout with microfibre, holds purely magnetically with no adhesive strips front or back, takes a screen protector without issue, and it’s the only case here that doesn’t destroy the feeling of holding a premium device.

JETech — $34.99

Vegan leather imitation, 30 grams, and refreshingly uncomplicated. There is only a back shell — no front part, no adhesive strips, nothing to stick anywhere. The hinge is covered at the side, which matters more than it sounds: that’s the part that takes the hit when the device lands on its spine.

What impressed me most is a small thing. On several other cases the shell flaps loose when you open the device and has to be pressed back by hand. This one lays itself back down on its own. MagSafe holds at 1.84 kilograms, comfortably enough for a car mount on rough roads. The interior feels like Apple’s own woven material; the outside looks like leather but smells of chemistry.

Protection is limited to the back, the hinge and the camera. The front display stays open, and there’s no inner lining.

Torro — $44.99

Real leather, proper stitching, no loose threads, and a smell that gives it away as the real thing. At 79 grams it’s the heaviest case in the test, and the device becomes noticeably bulkier — that comes with the format.

The device clicks into the shell and holds firmly with nothing glued, and there’s an interior lining that keeps grit off the back. The hard corners mean a drop onto the edge is genuinely covered, even though the frame itself sits open. You can prop the phone up with it.

The decisive advantage is the screen protector compatibility — this is the one case that takes even large glass without a fight. The decisive drawback is MagSafe, or rather its complete absence. Charging wirelessly through it works, but weakly and unreliably, and a car mount is out of the question.

One more thing to know: without cards in the slot there’s a gap between the flap and the device, and the flap then knocks against the front display.

Pitaka — $59.99

17 grams, aramid fibre, and the lightest case here by a wide margin. It sits perfectly and holds rock solid even without the adhesive strips it includes — which raises the question of why they’re in the box at all. To Pitaka’s credit, spare strips and extra pads are supplied, which most manufacturers no longer bother with.

The packaging was a genuine annoyance: the opening mechanism didn’t work on my unit, the pull strip wouldn’t come away cleanly, and I ended up cutting the box open.

On protection there’s not much to report. Camera covered, scratches covered, and that’s it — no hinge protection, no inner lining, no display protection. MagSafe holds at 1.09 kilograms, the weakest figure among the magnetic cases. Given that the device already has a titanium frame and a hard back, it’s fair to ask what exactly you’re buying here.

Torras — $69.99

This is the protection recommendation. 50 grams, a hard shell, and the only case here where the back, the hinge, the camera and the front display are all covered. On top of that a 360-degree kickstand that rotates and holds at any angle, a screen protector included in the box, and spare adhesive strips.

The back shell needs no glue; only the front frame has to be fixed down. MagSafe sits at 1.19 kilograms, which is enough for a car mount.

Two limitations are worth knowing before you buy. First, the front bar covers a visible strip of the display — on a white background it’s immediately obvious. Second, this case turns the Duo into a fairly serious lump.

My recommendation is therefore a compromise: use the back shell only and put a screen protector on the front. You keep the protection for back, hinge and camera, and nothing covers your display.

Apple Poly Case — $79

This is where it gets uncomfortable, because the test ended after a few minutes: the case does not fit the device. The cutout for the camera bump doesn’t match its shape, and it makes no difference which side you start from — the shell won’t seat at the top.

On top of that, the front frame overlaps a strip of the display. It physically rests on the active area. $79 from Apple directly, and it doesn’t fit. I saved myself the remaining measurements.

Apple Folio — $129.99

The most expensive case in this test, and the one that stays on my phone. Lined throughout with microfibre, technical woven fabric on the outside, and it holds purely magnetically, front and back, with nothing to glue. Camera protected, inner lining present, screen protector no problem. A built-in hinge lets you prop the device up at angles you won’t get anywhere else.

Objectively this is not good protection. The frame is completely exposed, so a drop onto asphalt hits the titanium directly. MagSafe holding force comes in at 0.88 kilograms — the only figure in this test below the one-kilogram mark, which rules out a car mount. The folding mechanism is audibly noisy. And at 57 grams it weighs more than the far tougher Torras.

Why it stays anyway: it’s the only case here that doesn’t ruin how the device feels. Every other one turns the Duo into more or less a plastic object. Trading protection for feel is a deliberate choice — not a good one, but an understandable one.

Three cases from the video can’t currently be bought for the Duo in the United States, so there’s nothing to link — but the results are worth knowing if you’re watching the video.

The Spigen Tough Armor Pro recorded the strongest MagSafe figure of the entire test at 2.33 kilograms, far ahead of everything else, and it’s one of the few that includes spare adhesive strips. Everything else about it disappointed: plastic build, no screen protector compatibility, and an appearance that makes a $1,999 device look like a toy. Spigen has since pulled it from its line-up.

The ROXX Clear Case weighs 30 grams and holds magnetically on the back with no adhesive at all, at 1.5 kilograms of holding force. The front frame has to be glued and no spares are included, and it won’t work with a screen protector.

The ROXX Silicone Case was the price-performance winner of the German test and the only case of all nine with an inner lining at the hinge — exactly where grit collects. 37 grams, clean button action, 1.18 kilograms of MagSafe. No screen protector compatibility either.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a case together with a screen protector?
Usually not. As soon as a case has a separate front frame resting on top, that frame sits on the glass. It works without problems on the JETech, the Torro and the Apple Folio. On the Torras it works, but the front bar then covers a strip of the display.

Which case protects the inner display?
None of them. Nothing can rest on it by design, otherwise the device wouldn’t close.

What does the MagSafe figure in kilograms mean?
It’s measured with a pull gauge on a MagSafe stand. Anything above one kilogram holds reliably on a car mount, including over rough surfaces. Below that it gets risky.

Why do spare adhesive strips matter?
Many iPhone Duo cases have a front part that is glued on. Take it off once and the strip no longer holds. Without spares, the case is effectively used up. Only the Pitaka and the Torras include them among the cases available here.

Which one would you buy?
For real protection, the Torras — back shell only, with a screen protector on the front. For the best balance of price and sense, the JETech. If feel matters more to you than protection and you accept the risk, the Apple Folio.
