I used the iPhone 18 Pro Max every day for two weeks. Not as a test, not with a stopwatch, just as my normal phone. The honest answer to the question: no, I don’t regret switching. But only because I run this channel. Without it I’d probably still be on my old device. And the reason is neither the camera nor the battery, but something you can’t see when you buy it.

The Camera: Good, but Invisible Day to Day

On paper, plenty has changed. Over two weeks I shot the way I always do: kids, food, products for the channel, the occasional thing outdoors. And I can’t show you a single photo and tell you my old phone couldn’t have taken it.

Someone who shoots professionally might find the differences. In everyday use I don’t. That’s not criticism of the camera, which is good. It’s criticism of the expectation. If the camera is your reason for upgrading and you take normal everyday photos, you’ll be disappointed. Not because it’s bad, but because you won’t see the difference.

The Battery: Same Runtime, Faster Charging

Two things get mixed up here constantly, so let’s separate them.

Runtime: I notice no difference in everyday use. I get home in the evening with roughly the same charge left as before. No „wow, I barely need to charge anymore.“ It’s a phone that lasts a day, just like before.

Charging: That genuinely is different, and I didn’t feel it, I measured it. Plugged in at 0 percent with Apple’s own charger, the display showed 47 percent after 15 minutes. That’s fast. But it’s a number from a test setup. In real life you don’t run your phone to zero and start a stopwatch. You plug it in at night and it’s full in the morning, exactly like before. Charging is objectively better. I didn’t notice it once in two weeks.

What I Actually Noticed Every Day

Here’s the one thing I noticed every single day, and it’s on no spec sheet: the color. I have the black model, and this isn’t the black of previous generations. It has a depth that photos, and even video, barely capture. Every time I pick it up I think: that’s a beautiful device.

And here’s the catch: you only see that color without a case. The moment a case goes on, you’re holding a black rectangle like any other.

Why I Still Don’t Use It Naked

You could say: then use it without a case. That’s exactly what I don’t dare to do, and the reason only became clear to me during these two weeks.

I came from a 17 Pro Max in silver. It had the same anodized aluminium frame, the same softness, the same problem. You just don’t see it on silver. The reason is simple: when anodized aluminium gets scratched, the colored layer is worn away and bare metal shows through. Bare aluminium is silvery. On a silver body you barely notice. On a black one you see every single line, because suddenly something bright sits on black.

So I had the problem the whole time, I just never saw it. How soft the frame really is became clear in my own scratch test, where even a box cutter left marks.

Front and Back: Big Differences

The front is in much better shape. Ceramic Shield 2 sits at hardness 5 on the Mohs scale according to the EU data sheet, and that holds up in daily use. The camera lens is sapphire at hardness 9 and won’t scratch with ordinary materials. I even tried a broken porcelain tile on it, and nothing happened.

The frame and the back are the soft spots, which is exactly what carries that beautiful color.

The Contradiction You Can’t Escape

Either you use the iPhone naked, see the color every day and then look at your edges after a few weeks. Or you put a case on it and never see the reason you chose that color again.

I went with the case. Put plainly: I bought a phone in a color I practically never see. And I suspect most people are in the same spot. Which case hides the color least is in my comparison of the best iPhone 18 Pro cases.

Otherwise It’s the Same Phone

And this is the part that might save you the most money. The handling is the same, the size is the same, the display looks like before, Face ID works like before, the buttons sit where they sat. In two weeks there wasn’t a single moment where I thought: my 17 Pro Max couldn’t do that.

I don’t mean that as a put-down. The 17 Pro Max was already a very good phone, and the 18 Pro Max is too. But if you’re coming from a current Pro model hoping for that new feeling, you’re buying a few percent of camera, a few minutes of charging time and a nicer color that you’ll then put in a case.

My Verdict

I’m keeping it because I do the testing here. I need the current device, otherwise I can’t tell you anything about cases, screen protectors and accessories. For me it’s a work tool, and I switch every year because the channel demands it. Without the channel I’d probably have stayed on the 16 Pro Max, for one reason: it had a titanium frame, and titanium is tougher than anodized aluminium.

That’s exactly where progress went the wrong way for me. I have a new phone that’s better in many ways, and a frame that’s more delicate than the one from two years ago.

✓ Coming from a 17 Pro: save your money, you won’t feel the difference day to day.
✓ Coming from a 16 Pro or older: the jump is real, but decide on the color with a clear head. I’d go with silver.

Because this is the part I misjudged myself: the color doesn’t decide whether the frame gets scratched. It only decides whether you see it. Silver forgives you everything. Black shows every line.

Which case actually protects the frame is in my big case test. Which screen protectors failed for me is in my iPhone 18 Pro screen protector test.
