Nillkin Case for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Tested: The Winner With the Strongest Magnet
Out of six cases tested for the Galaxy Z Fold 8, exactly one is left that I would actually keep for myself. The Nillkin costs around $48 and delivers precisely what most of the competition fails at: a magnet that genuinely holds, build quality that feels like the money you paid, and protection that extends to the hinge.
What’s in the Box: Hinge Protection Instead of Tempered Glass
The box contains two parts — back shell and front piece — plus cleaning wipes and one extra I didn’t find with any other case in the test: a stick-on hinge protector. There’s no tempered glass included, but this hinge protector covers exactly the spot you otherwise can’t reach.
When you unfold the device, the protector simply lays itself over the joint. That’s cleverly solved. The only open question is how it holds up over months — something a test on installation day can’t answer.
Installation: First Case in the Test With Covered Buttons
The Nillkin is the first case in the entire field where the buttons aren’t just cut out but properly covered — and the press point is outstanding. You hear and feel immediately that someone thought this through.
The front piece has to be glued on, and that’s both a blessing and a curse. The upside: it sits rock solid, unlike the Spigen, whose front piece can simply be pushed out of the way. The downside: once removed, it won’t stick again. With only two adhesive strips included, you need to think carefully about how often you take the case off. For a case in this price range, a few more strips wouldn’t have hurt.
The Magnet Test: 1.5 Kilograms
This is where the test is decided. I measure MagSafe holding force on every case with a pull-force gauge in kilograms — my rule of thumb: anything above 1 kilo is usable.
The Nillkin reaches 1.5 kilograms, by far the highest value in the entire test. For comparison: Belkin manages 1.25 kg, Wiskin 1.12 kg, Spigen 1.04 kg. Even the considerably more substantial Subcase stays just below it. If you regularly attach your Fold to a magnetic car mount or work with MagSafe accessories, you notice that difference immediately in daily use.
Build Quality and Protection
This is a hard case with a rubber wrapping — exactly the construction I prefer in protective cases. The hard interior provides stability, the soft outer layer absorbs impact. A quick knock test tells you straight away that there’s proper material here.
The feel is the best in the field. The rubber feels premium, and the slightly textured surface sits well in the hand. The case adds some bulk, but the clean fit means you barely notice. At 41 grams it lands comfortably mid-field.
Camera and display protection are both present, and the lenses don’t stick out. A standard tempered glass fits underneath, though it slides around slightly. What’s missing is microfibre inner protection — in the entire test only the Torro leather case includes that.
The Criticisms
Besides the adhesive mechanism, there’s one small build flaw: the microphone cutout sits slightly off to the right. Nothing gets covered, but it isn’t perfect. To be fair: not a single manufacturer in the entire test got that right.
Verdict
The Nillkin is the right choice for most Fold 8 owners. It combines the strongest magnet, the best build quality, and is the only case that also protects the hinge — at a price well below the expensive competition. If you’re not planning to swap cases constantly, you’ll live comfortably with the glued front piece.
