After my iPhone 17 test you kept asking for privacy screen protectors. So I ordered three for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, unboxed them on camera, applied them and checked them. Two do exactly what you’d expect. One does considerably more, and it happens to solve a problem a lot of people are complaining about right now.
Why Face ID Is Tricky on the iPhone 18 Pro
On the iPhone 18 Pro, Apple moved the infrared camera for Face ID to the top center of the display. You only see it if you turn the display off and hold it under bright light, and then there’s a small circle. That’s exactly why matte screen protectors without a cutout in that spot no longer work reliably.
With privacy protectors the question was obvious: the layer darkens the screen, and behind it sits a camera that needs infrared light. The good news up front: Face ID worked immediately with all three protectors, with no re-scan and no dropouts.
The Three Contenders and Their Prices
Spigen: about $22 for 2 protectors, so roughly $11 each. No black frame.
ESR: about $42 for 3 protectors, with a black frame.
ROXX 360: about $32 for 2 protectors.

Privacy protectors generally cost more than regular ones. That’s probably down to manufacturing, since the privacy layer has to be built into the stack.
Installation
All three come with an alignment tray you drop the iPhone into. That’s the approach that works reliably. I still advise against the soft frames you lay on the display and then place the glass into yourself, because the glass almost always ends up crooked.
A practical tip: the big dust stickers Spigen includes are worth their weight in gold. You can use one of them to prep the other brands‘ protectors too. And don’t press too hard on the tray when you pull the tab, or it’ll tear off.
Privacy in the Test
On the Spigen and the ESR the privacy effect works very well from the left and right. Past a certain angle all you see is black. From above and below, though, anyone can read along without effort. If you sit across from someone on the bus, or have someone behind you at the office, you’re only half protected.
The ROXX is designed as a 360 protector, and I checked that immediately: from above and below you can’t see anything either. That’s the difference you actually notice day to day, for example when someone looks over your shoulder.
The Air Gap: This Is Where It Gets Interesting
Many of you report that screen protectors don’t stick properly at the edges on the iPhone 18 Pro. A narrow ring of air stays all around and won’t press out. With the Spigen and the ESR that’s exactly what happened. I pressed it down repeatedly, and the ring came right back.
On the ROXX it was basically absent. So I measured all three:
✗ Spigen: about 73.9 mm, air gap present
✗ ESR: about 73.6 mm, air gap all around
✓ ROXX 360: 74.6 mm plus a black frame, practically no air gap
That flips my original assumption. I thought bigger protectors would be more likely to have edge problems. In reality it’s the opposite: the glass has to be wide enough to reach across the 18’s more strongly curved edge, and the black frame hides the rest. One side effect: on privacy protectors an air gap is less noticeable than on clear ones, because the edge is darker. That doesn’t make it go away, though.
What You Need to Know About Brightness
One thing applies to every privacy protector: your display gets noticeably darker. Turn the brightness up and switch off auto brightness. The iPhone doesn’t know a privacy layer is attached, so otherwise it dims too far.
A software solution would be nicer. Samsung shows it can be done on the S26 Ultra, where you can switch privacy on in the settings, even for notifications only. Apple doesn’t offer that yet.
Verdict
If you want privacy, the ROXX 360 is the most interesting of the bunch for me: genuine all-round privacy and the only protector without an air gap. The Spigen is the cheapest option at about $11 per protector and does the job if side privacy is enough for you. The ESR sits in between but had the most noticeable air gap.
Honestly, I don’t use a privacy protector myself, because the display gets too dark for me. But if you work a lot on trains, in an office or in cafés, the difference is worth the premium.
