Do you need a camera protector on the iPhone 18 Pro? Against scratches: no. Against a drop: yes. And that distinction is what decides whether buying one makes sense for you.
I put the 18 Pro’s camera glass through a scratch test, using a brand-new box cutter and a porcelain tile. The result was nothing at all. Not a mark. That comes down to the material: Apple uses sapphire, and sapphire sits at 9 on the Mohs scale. The tile is an 8, a hardened steel blade considerably lower. Anything softer simply cannot leave a scratch. That isn’t a marketing claim, it’s how the scale is defined.
So why make the video at all
Hardness is not the same as toughness. Sapphire is extremely scratch resistant and brittle at the same time. If the iPhone hits asphalt, or lands in gravel, the lens cracks no matter what the packaging says. And that’s the expensive scenario. Replacing a single camera lens on the current Pro models is not a small line item.
There are two ways to guard against it.
Option one: a case with a camera lip that sits high enough that the lenses never reach the ground. That’s the more elegant solution because there’s nothing to stick on. You can see which models handle it properly in my rundown of the iPhone 18 Pro cases I’ve tested. The catch: if the phone lands in gravel, a stone still presses into the cut-out, and the lip won’t save you.
Option two: a stick-on camera protector. These come in two fundamentally different designs, and I looked at both, unopened before filming, so everything happens on camera.
Design 1: one full cover over the whole camera plateau
I tested the Torras version at around 22 dollars. It’s a single plate that sits over the entire camera plateau, with cut-outs for the flash and the lidar sensor.
What’s good: the colour match is excellent. From most angles you’d assume it came that way. And you’re protecting more than the lenses, you’re protecting the whole raised surface, which is exactly where the housing wears first when the phone is set down. The piece has real weight to it, almost certainly aluminium.
Two things you need to know. First, the edges tend to lift along with the case when you pull a case off. That happened to me several times while filming. If you swap cases often, you’ll be pressing it back down constantly. Second, the cover adds one to two millimetres. A lot of current cases are closed off around the camera, and it simply won’t fit under those. Check before you buy, or it ends up in a drawer.

Design 2: individual rings per lens
The alternative is individual rings that cover the lenses only. I tested the ROXX version at around 21 dollars. The pack contains two sets plus a small lifting tool. It looks like a toothpick, but it’s the only thing that gets the rings off cleanly later. Don’t throw it away.
Once applied you basically can’t see them. The colour is matched just as well as on the full cover, and because they don’t sheet over the whole plateau, the back still reads as original. The big everyday advantage: they barely add thickness, so every case keeps working, including the ones closed off around the camera. And nothing lifts when you swap cases.
The downside is the flip side of that: the area between the lenses stays exposed. If you want the whole plateau covered, you need the other design.

Does it affect photo quality?
The lenses are covered and the camera works exactly as before. Flash and lidar stay open on both versions, so portraits and low light are unaffected. If you shoot professionally you might spot a difference in certain lighting. In all my testing I never have, and I’m no professional photographer.
My verdict
A camera protector is not scratch insurance. It’s drop insurance for about 20 dollars, on a phone whose camera module costs many times that to repair.
If you rarely change cases and want maximum coverage, take the full cover, and check first whether your case is open around the camera. If you swap often, or you want nobody to notice anything, take the individual rings. Personally I stick the rings on and forget they’re there.
