The screen protector Apple sells in its own stores ought to be the best one. At least that’s what I expected. The Belkin UltraGlass 2 costs about $44, and its product description reads like a breakthrough. In my test of six protectors for the iPhone 18 Pro, it turned out to be the biggest letdown.
What Apple and Belkin Promise
The description is quite something. It lists technology developed in Germany, glass chemically strengthened through a double ion-exchange process, and up to 25 times more strength than conventional protective glass. It adds lithium aluminosilicate glass that’s supposed to be stronger, more flexible and extremely scratch-resistant, and that survives drops from up to 2.2 meters. What „conventional protective glass“ means exactly is never explained. Beating ordinary window glass isn’t much of an achievement.
Unboxing: The Essentials Are Missing
Inside the box are exactly one protector, an alignment tray, a warranty card and a dry cloth. There’s no wet cleaning wipe and no dust stickers. At this price that’s hard to believe, because without a wet wipe and dust stickers you’re almost guaranteed to trap dust or a greasy film under the glass. So that nobody could say I did it wrong, I borrowed a wet wipe from another box.
Installation: Bubbles That Stay
Installation uses an alignment tray: place the glass on top, put the iPhone in, pull the tab. Even so, I ended up with two big air bubbles and lots of tiny ones. You can push the big ones out, but the small ones hardly move. On a $44 protector that’s a disaster. The glass also sat crooked, with less space to the edge on one side than the other, even though you can’t really get the tray wrong. Without a black frame, the edge is clearly visible in the light.
One tip: Apple offers to apply the protector in store. If you really want it, use that service. If something goes wrong there, staff simply take a new one off the shelf. At home, you’re out of luck.
The Hardness Test
Face ID works, and the box cutter left no marks. Then came the tile, and the scratches were obvious right away. There were clearly more than on the ROXX Japanese glass and the Torras. There was no sign of that extremely scratch-resistant glass.
The Moment It Breaks
I wanted to peel it off for the bend test, and it broke while I was doing it. It didn’t even survive being peeled off after a scratch, let alone a 2.2-meter drop. By the way, the JETech at about $7 per protector is exactly the same size.
Verdict
The Belkin UltraGlass 2 is the most expensive protector in the test and also the worst. The cleaning wipes are missing, the air bubbles barely come out, the glass sat crooked, scratched clearly and broke first. That’s $44 in the trash, and I clearly advise against it.
