The OtterBox Symmetry Cactus Leather surprised me in my big iPhone 18 Pro case test. In the MagSafe pull test it briefly held the record. In the end it was one of only three cases I actually recommend. It does have one weakness, though, and you notice it the first time you press a button.
Price: Big Discount, High List Price
I paid about $37 for the case. Amazon showed a 43 percent discount at the time, and the regular price is about $65. At the sale price it’s a good deal, but at full price I wouldn’t buy it. It comes in several colors, including black, gray and blue.
Material and Build
The back has a grained leather look. As the name says, it’s cactus leather, so it isn’t animal leather, and it smells different from the real leather Mous case. The first impression is premium, with metal buttons and a clean finish overall. I did find a small flaw on the top edge, but you won’t see it once the iPhone is in the case.
The texture is a matter of taste, and it reminds me a little of my grandma’s handbag. If it doesn’t do that for you, you get a surface that sits well in the hand and doesn’t slip. On my case, fingerprints didn’t show at all.
Weight and Thickness
At 39 grams the Symmetry is light and doesn’t add bulk. It’s a completely normal case, neither thin nor chunky.
The Weakness: Stiff Buttons
The iPhone sits firmly in the case, which is good. The buttons, however, are much stiffer than on the other cases in the test. You have to press noticeably harder before anything happens, and that goes for both the volume and side buttons. Camera Control, on the other hand, works perfectly with a single press, double press, light press and shutter.
Protection
The Symmetry is a hard shell with a raised lip around the screen and camera. It also has an inner lining. It isn’t as fluffy as the microfiber in the Apple or ROXX cases, and feels more like suede. For everyday drops, and for the odd hike, the protection is very good. If you want extra screen protection, you’ll find matching protectors in my iPhone 18 Pro screen protector test.
MagSafe: 1.61 kg
This is where the OtterBox shines. With 1.61 kg in the pull test, it overtook the ROXX NextEra at 1.59 kg and briefly took the top spot. Only the MiraCase later managed more, with 1.75 kg. For MagSafe car mounts, stands and power banks, that’s an excellent result.
Verdict
The OtterBox Symmetry Cactus Leather is the best choice in the test if you want a leather look. It gives you good protection, an inner lining and one of the strongest magnets, all at just 39 grams. The stiff buttons and the high list price are the downside. On sale at around $37 it’s a clear recommendation, and I’d pick it myself for a hike. The overall winner is in my comparison of all ten iPhone 18 Pro cases.
