The Torras Ostand Q3 Air has the most extras of any case in the test. There’s a fold-out stand, a thick protective frame and spare buttons in the box. It also costs a lot more than most of the competition. I checked whether it’s worth it and found a problem that mainly affects drivers.
Price
I paid about $61. That was a limited-time Amazon deal, and the regular price is about $72, which puts it among the pricier cases in the test. It comes in black, blue and burgundy, to match the new iPhone colors.
What Makes It Special
Two things set the Q3 Air apart from the other cases. The first is a thick frame you can press in slightly, which works like an airbag. It’s meant to absorb the energy of an impact so it doesn’t pass straight to the iPhone. The second is a ring on the back that folds out. It lets you stand the iPhone upright, sideways or at an angle, for videos or video calls, for example. The box also includes spare buttons, so you can change the color of the keys.
Weight and Thickness
The Q3 Air weighs 54 grams, which makes it one of the heavier cases in the test. You clearly feel it in the hand, as the iPhone gets heavier and thicker. It’s a real chunk to hold.
Build, Buttons and Camera Control
The build quality is good, and at this price I didn’t expect anything less. The iPhone sits very firmly in the case. I can’t say yet whether the stand’s hinge will loosen over time, though I haven’t read any reports of it doing so. All the buttons press very well. Camera Control works with a single or double press, a light press and the shutter.
Protection
The case is a hard shell with the protective frame mentioned above. The screen lip stands high enough, and there’s camera protection too. There’s no inner lining, though. MagSafe: The Kickstand Problem
MagSafe charging works despite the stand. The holding strength is where the problem shows. When you pull the phone off, the ring folds up instead of the whole case letting go. I measured 1.22 kg, well below the leaders at up to 1.75 kg. In practice, a MagSafe car mount on cobblestones may not drop your iPhone, but it can leave it hanging crooked from the unfolded ring.
Verdict
The Torras Ostand Q3 Air has a cool design, good drop protection and a handy stand. But it’s thick and heavy, has no inner lining, and its MagSafe holds weaker than the competition. For normal everyday use you take on too many drawbacks. It makes sense if you constantly need a stand or your iPhone often falls from a height, on a construction site for example.
